How to Stay Active During Winter

When winter blows in, staying active and getting daily movement can be challenging. Here are some tips to help move your body during the colder months.

Get Steps In

According to the Mayo Clinic, The average American walks 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day or roughly two miles. No matter your step goal, you don’t need to be outside to participate in this simple exercise. Here are some easy ways to get more steps in each day.

  • Take a walk during lunch
  • Park further away from the grocery store
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Do chores around the house
  • Invest in a walking pad if you work from home

Do at-home workouts

At-home workouts can be just as effective and even more affordable than a monthly membership to the gym. All you need is yourself, a yoga mat, and some free weights. Home workouts also allow you to customize your training to your needs and schedule. If you have a specific exercise in mind, do a quick YouTube search to find a free class.

Take Winter Rides

If you don’t experience heavy snowstorms or live in a warmer climate, riding your bike in the winter can be safer than you think. Just keep an eye on the forecast, dress appropriately, and be extra cautious.

Try a New Winter Hobby

If the outside air refills your cup, there are many ways to spend meaningful time outdoors in the winter.

If you’ve never tried a winter sport or activity, this could be a great time to try. If you live in an area with snow, try out skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or tubing.

If snow isn’t on the radar, try taking a new route on your next walk or ride, and explore the beautiful area you call home.
