Pedal Assist vs Throttle Assist

As Part 2 elaborated upon, an electric bicycle is a superior mode of transportation from a financial, environmental, and wellbeing perspective. We know it uses a battery-powered motor, but how? This is where electric assistance comes in. There are two main ways an eBike makes use of this.

Let’s dive into each one a little deeper.

Pedal Assist

Pedal assist still incorporates pedaling, and therefore provides more battery range out of a single charge. So, how does it work? Pedal assist electric bicycles, often called “pedelecs,” simply provide extra power to supplement the pedaling.

There are two different types of pedal assist sensors (PAS):

  • Torque Sensor Pedal Assist: Torque sensors will provide assistance that’s proportionally based on the rider’s pedal power, while still using manually-controlled assist levels.
  • Speed Sensor Pedal Assist: Providing the smoothest ride possible, speed sensors—also called cadence sensors—aren’t influenced by your pedaling efforts. Found in all Blix bikes, this type of PAS provides assistance based on the level you selected.

If you want a comfortable ride to work on your Aveny, then a speed sensor will provide power independent of your pedal effort. The power put out by the speed sensor PAS doesn’t change with pedaling speed, but will reduce output when speeds surpass 20mph.

Throttle Assist

Like with a scooter, moped, or motorcycle, throttle assistance comes from a throttle that’s typically found on the handlebar. When activated, it provides direct power to the motor—without the need to pedal. A quick twist or push of the throttle can help riders reach a certain speed, or maintain speed when exhausted from pedaling.

Some eBikes have a throttle function only, but most have both pedal assist and a manual throttle to be used when needed. All Blix bikes are equipped with both—giving riders more options and providing a seamless ride from start to stop.
