Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere these days. They’re found in the laptop or smartphone you’re reading this on, as well as in both electric cars and electric bicycles. In fact, these batteries help to put the “assist” in pedal and throttle assist eBikes. With their rise in popularity and developments in electric battery technology, they’re becoming more affordable and sustainable all the time.

A great choice for eBikes, lithium-ion batteries are portable, lightweight, highly efficient, and rechargeable.

Wondering how to compare eBike batteries? Consider that voltage (V) translates to power, amp hours (Ah) measures capacity, and watt hours (Wh) combines the two to let you understand how far you might go on a full charge. This can be found using a simple equation, and can be considered the capacity of the battery.

Watt hours = voltage x amp hours (Ah)

The standard battery on Blix bikes is a 48V 12.8Ah lithium-ion battery. So, in many Blix models, the watt hours are equal to 48 (volt) x 12.8 (Ah), or 614.4 Wh. The only exception is the Kompas, which has a 10Ah battery.

Generally speaking, typical eBike batteries range from about 300 Wh to 1,000 Wh. Why are watt hours important? Because they're the biggest determinant of range.

Knowing the capacity of the battery can help us understand its range, or how many miles can be ridden on a single charge. The range depends on not only the capacity of the battery, but also the weight of the rider, cadence of pedaling, tire pressure, and environmental conditions (terrain, elevation, etc.).

With a variety of batteries in use, eBikes can achieve a wide range from around 20 to 100 miles on a single charge, although most provide between 20 and 60 miles per charge.
