A Day Just
For You

World Health Day is an invitation to put yourself first.

Founded in 1948 by the WHO, the holiday is designed to bring awareness to physical and mental health. While the value of a balanced life is well known, it can still be challenging to support on a consistent basis. In fact, many people don’t even realize that April 7th is a global holiday dedicated to the subject. Between work, errands, families and friends, there’s hardly enough time in the day to take a deep breath. This year, we’re challenging you to do what’s best. Not for your bank account or the person next to you, but for your mind, body and spirit.

You don’t have to wake up at sunrise to squeeze in an adventure. And for some, an adventure isn’t the answer.

Overall health looks different to all of us and the key to achieving it is listening to your body’s signals. Following 2020 and in the wake of Covid-19, this practice is more relevant than ever. While the virus primarily targets the body, many have felt the weight of this pandemic in their mind. Lockdown was not easy and as the weeks slid into months, familiar setting and systems flew out the window. Where many of us could comfortably work out of the living room, teachers were forced to turn their entire routine upside down. Jackie, a rider from North Dakota, went from an organized classroom to a windowless office in a matter of days. “I felt like I never saw the sun and the weeks were all blending together. To be the teacher my students needed, I had to take a step back and consider my mental health.” Jackie had taken self-care days before but this was different. “All I wanted was peace and quiet. My mind needed to wander so I grabbed my Vika+ and hit the road. Pretty soon there I was, riding out to Lake Ashtabula.” April 7th is an opportunity to slow down and listen. Maybe it's a reason to catch the sunrise on a morning ride or the push you needed to make a move. Regardless, close your laptop, get outside and discover what World Health Day can mean. The beauty of this holiday is that you’re encouraged to do just that.

Regardless of what the calendar says, your health is a priority. It’s no secret that staying active is the key, yet as a society, we are fairly sedentary. Yes, people run marathons and swim hundreds of miles before 9 am, buton average, Americans sit nearly 10 hours a day. Randy, one of our new riders from South Carolina, had spent most of his adult life, in a chair behind a desk. When it was finally time to retire, he was eager to put his body to work instead. “Now that I have Vika+, I leave my car in the garage as much as possible. I can’t imagine going back to my old life. Since I've started riding, I see the world and my body rewards me for it. I’m breathing better, experiencing more and living each day to the fullest.” It’s easy to get sidetracked by the coming and goings of life and miss out on the best parts. At times, work has to take priority and entertainment can easily be sourced through a screen. But as supply chains and amazon deliveries have evolved our routine, free-time and unplanned adventures have payed the price. Strategically placed in Spring (the season of rebirth), World Health Day is a built-in reminder that life is meant to be lived, not managed, maintained or checked off. This year, we invite you to celebrate outside. Feel the wind hit your skin and embrace wherever your thoughts take you.

Maybe today is an opportunity to get lost in your neighborhood or the perfect excuse ride along the coast with a friend. Whatever you choose, enjoy every second of it. World Health Day is yours to experience.
